The Arch: Colour or not?

with 5 comments

This bridge in York has thrown up yet another dilemma, one that I seem to face on a daily basis. To colour or not to colour. Both are presented here and I would welcome feedback from others.

  1. If the water was a nicer colour I would say colour, but I think BW works better.

Is a shame you cropped off the top of the arch. Great spotting 🙂

    • Sadly the crop is unavoidable, the bridge that this arch forms a part of was full of traffic: lorries, cars and buses. This pair of photos I’ve somewhat lost interest in, I’m in agreement with you that they need some nice colour in the water. Perhaps early morning might work.

  2. I think the b/w works best, maybe with a hint of sepia? Not much, just a little. Nice work.

  3. I think the coloured one: not classic colours (blue water – yellow stone bridge), but actually really subtle and beautiful shades. The river is especially interesting – almost red – and tones with the bridge. And there’s that wonderful blob of blue in the river behind the bridge – tantalising – what’s it reflecting? The colours also bring out the textures of the water better.

    • Best guess for the reflection is the sky, the sun was peeking out intermittently and was very bright, but in all honesty I can’t remember.

This image has puzzled me ever since I took it. At times I find it boring, at other captivating. Strange thing, art.
