The musings of a budding photographer

A day at the reservoir

with 2 comments

Today was the first day I have travelled specifically for photography. Up nice and early to make best use of the light, I travelled a couple of miles up the road to the local reservoir. The goal for the day was to capture some shots that were “interesting”. Must admit I didn’t really know what that meant when I set out, you can be the judge of whether or not I succeded.

This was the first one of the day, I spotted the fence out of the corner of my eye and figured the storm behind would make a great shot. I used the “300” lightroom preset and then tweaked it a little to get to this image. I really like it, it’s quite arty somehow. Up until this image all the photos I’d taken were the same as any mug would take, aim at the res and snap away. This one was new territory.

Having found one interesting image I plowed on and spotted a couple more. First up was a tire sunk in the mud, though it hasn’t come out too well. Then there were three bricks. I had a couple of goes, then in a moment of inspiration I stuck the flash on. The results you can judge for yourself, once again a modified 300 preset

After doing the post processing I’ve started to wonder about trying to sell these images. They look great up at full resolution (10mp) and would make great prints. Probably not everyones cup of tea, but I’m sure there are people who like this kind of stuff hanging on the wall.

Next task, figure out where to get good quality prints from. I don’t see tescos cutting it, but I might be suprised.

  1. Hi, just found your blog (googled something like “beginning photography”, so it was one of the top ones :)) and just wanted to say I love these two pics, especially the top one. Beautiful! And I am finding your blog to be very helpful so far, as I have also just decided to learn something about DSLRs! So thanks!

    • Thanks for the comments, I’m glad you like them and find them useful. The photo of the barbed wire fence is still my favourite to date I think.
